Towards the HSC With ICT
Using ICT to investigate, analyse and evaluate texts.
This course aims to encourage teachers to use ICT in year groups where it is least often used in innovative ways.
Towards the HSC with ICT will provide teachers with the pedagogical knowledge and practical skills for using ICT strategies that are relevant to the curriculum and assessment requirements of the senior years in humanities subjects, particularly English.
The course will have a particular focus on using ICT in the analysis, interpretation and assessment of texts. Some of the tools that teachers will be encouraged to use in this course include Wikispaces, EdPuzzle, Padlet, Google Docs and basic podcasting and webquesting platforms.
This course will look at using ICT to:
- explore and investigate
- analyse and interpret print text
- analyse and interpret film and multimedia text
- evaluate and assess.
This course consists of two parts. A workshop day (5.5hrs), and a follow-on component (10.5hrs). You must successfully complete both parts in order to gain the 16 professional learning hours.
Follow-on
The follow-on component for this course (10.5 hrs) is described below. This is an opportunity for you to have some time to take what you learned during the workshop and apply it to your own context and your own students. Information about due dates and instructions will be emailed to participants after the workshop day.
Create and execute one ICT task with one of your 10, 11 or 12 classes from each of the following categories which were explored in the course: Explore, Investigate and establish Context, Analyse and Interpret, Evaluate and Assess. Upload at least one sample of student work to our online community as well as any supporting documentation. Complete a reflection about your lesson and interact with the other teachers in the course in the online community. Participants then complete a personal reflection piece and a course survey. Satisfactory completion of the follow-on will be according to a framework that will be emailed out to participants.

Completing this course will contribute 16 hours of QTC Registered PD addressing 1.5.2, 2.6.2, 3.3.2, 3.4.2 , 6.2.2, 7.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

Dr Felicity Castagna spent several years teaching English, English as a Second Language and Special Needs Education in public and Catholic high schools before leaving to complete a PhD in Australian literature and creative writing practice at the Writing and Society Research Centre, Western Sydney University. Since leaving high school teaching she has taught new media writing, literature and creative writing at WSU and Macquarie University as well as training preservice English teachers to teach creative writing. In addition to this she has spent several years working with various arts organisations, writing centres and schools to research and develop writing programs for young people.
She is a popular public speaker and presenter at festivals and schools and is currently the Department of Education's National Ambassador for Literacy as well as sitting on the Board of Directors for the organisation, WestWords: Western Sydney Literature Project.
Her latest book, The Incredible Here and Now received the Prime Minister's Literature Award for Young Adult writing in 2014 and is Australia's Honour Book for Writing in the international IBBY list. She has written for ABC Radio and television as well as publishing widely in newspapers and magazines and educational journals. She is also the author of the short story collection, Small Indiscretions. She has two books and play forthcoming as well as multiple installation projects.

You can delete your own enrolment through MyPL, however keep in mind any cancellations made within 2 days of the event or no-shows will incur the full cost, charged to your school. Please contact us if there are any issues with your attendance.
What's a follow-on component?
Some of our courses include a follow-on component to be completed by the participant in their school context with the aim of transferring the new practice to their teaching and learning repertoire. These deliverables are included as part of the course hours and are designed to engage teachers in real ‘learning through doing’ leading to improvement in the skills and capabilities of teachers. This is an opportunity for you to have some time to take what you learned during the workshop and apply it to your own context and your own students. Details of the follow-on will be emailed out to all participants. The deliverables must meet the following Criteria:
- Product (this may refer to lesson plan, unit of work or other digital product)
- evidence of creativity;
- planning and/or design;
- incorporation of key ideas in the course;
- integration of technology; and
- a published/shared product that is appropriate to audience, purpose and context.
- Online Interaction
- peer feedback; and
- community building.
- Personal Written Reflection (200 words):
- Reflect on the learning experience gained by participating in this course, including the deliverables, OR reflect on your classroom practice (including a description of the pedagogical approach, delivery and implications for the future); AND
- Reflect on how you achieved one or more of the specified professional learning standards.
