Managing iPads with Apple Configurator 2 and MDM
How to use Configurator to install the latest iOS and a selection of free and paid apps
So, you have purchased some iPads for school and found some great apps to use in the classroom – but now managing, purchasing and installing apps is becoming cumbersome – what do you do? Apple Configurator could be the solution. Apple Configurator is ideal for preparing multiple iPads, installing apps and defining settings.
In this hands-on workshop, you will be guided step-by-step through how to use Configurator to install the latest iOS and a selection of free and paid apps.
With the release of iOS9, there are significant changes in managing iPads for classroom use. Configurator 2 provides an all-new interface and workflows for preparing multiple iPads, defining settings using Profiles, purchasing and installing apps from the Volume Purchase Program (VPP). The workshop will also look at how updated Mobile Device Management (MDM) solutions can now be used for managing iPads over WiFi in both shared and individual deployments in schools. This hands-on workshop is designed for existing Configurator users and those new to managing iPads.
This workshop will cover:
- Methods for deploying and managing iPads
- Apple Volume Purchase Program (VPP) for apps
- Creating and Managing Apple IDs
- Installing Apple Configurator
- Using Configurator to prepare iPads with the latest iOS
- Supervised Mode
- Installing free apps and paid apps purchased through VPP
- Creating and installing Profiles to manage settings
You will come away equipped to confidently manage the iPads at your school, plus you will have opportunity to share ideas and app recommendations with those attending.
Note: Configurator is Apple software and runs on Mac only. You need a Mac computer to run the software eg MacBook.

What's a follow-on component?
Some of our courses include a follow-on component to be completed by the participant in their school context with the aim of transferring the new practice to their teaching and learning repertoire. These deliverables are included as part of the course hours and are designed to engage teachers in real ‘learning through doing’ leading to improvement in the skills and capabilities of teachers. This is an opportunity for you to have some time to take what you learned during the workshop and apply it to your own context and your own students. Details of the follow-on will be emailed out to all participants. The deliverables must meet the following Criteria:
- Product (this may refer to lesson plan, unit of work or other digital product)
- evidence of creativity;
- planning and/or design;
- incorporation of key ideas in the course;
- integration of technology; and
- a published/shared product that is appropriate to audience, purpose and context.
